Commencement of charities legislation a positive development – MacSharry

Published on: 08 July 2016

Fianna Fáil TD for Sligo – Leitrim Marc MacSharry says the decision by the Government to commence the provisions of Section 4 of the Charities Act 2009 is a positive development.

Deputy MacSharry raised the issue with the Government in the Dáil last week when he called for the legislation to be put to full use without delay.

“The recent controversy at Console has caused serious reputational damage to the charities sector. Unfortunately it has led many people to unfairly paint all charities with the same brush. The Charities Act 2009 allows for good governance and appropriate management of charities and will help restore public confidence in the sector.

“The full provisions of this important act were not implemented by the previous Government, and last week I called on Minister Richard Bruton to rectify this oversight without delay. Today’s news that the Government has finally commenced Section 4 of the act is a positive development.”
