Troy criticises decision to remove eFlow tagging from key motorways

Published on: 07 July 2016

Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Transport Robert Troy says the proposal to remove eFlow tagging from a number of different motorways could have a serious impact on traffic congestion at toll booths unless it is averted by the end of August.

Deputy Troy made the comments after the revelation that eFlow will not be renewing its contract with Celtic Roads Group, operator of a number of motorways in Ireland. The decision will mean that customers can no longer use eFlow tolling on the M1 near Drogheda, the M7 / M8 south of Portlaoise and the N25 at Waterford.

“The removal of eFlow tolling on these routes could lead to increased congestion at these tolls and will lead to increased journey times for commuters and those working in the haulage industry.

“It’s hard to believe that at a time when other countries are moving towards barrier free tolling we are instead moving backwards by demanding motorists have cash in hand in order to pass through a toll.

“This is very much a public transport issue and the NTA cannot shun its responsibility in ensuring a deal is hammered out between Celtic Roads and eFlow. Minister for Transport Shane Ross also needs to intervene and sit down with both parties in this dispute.

“A solution must be found to settle this dispute before significant disruption is caused to commuters.”
