FF remains committed to reforming school admissions – Byrne

Fianna Fáil Education spokesperson Thomas Byrne TD has reiterated that his party is committed to reforming the schools admissions process by making it fairer and more open.

Deputy Byrne explained, “Fianna Fáil outlined its policy on schools admissions before the General Election.

“I am determined that this issue be a priority in the coming months.  This legislation will have an impact on thousands of families across the country and it is essential that lessons are learned from Labour’s badly handled divestment programme.  This flawed proposal yielded few results and ended up annoying many communities.

“Fianna Fáil is also acutely conscious of the needs of minority faith schools.

“It’s essential that every interest group, including parents, is brought before the Oireachtas Education Committee so that their voices and ideas can be heard, and to ensure that the process is one of inclusion, not exclusion.  However, this must be done in a professional and timely manner so that the rules governing school admission can be changed well in time for September 2017 admissions,” concluded Deputy Byrne.
